Who we are
Since 2004, Hillside Solutions, Soil Dynamics, and Gretna Sanitation have successfully helped tens of thousands of homes and businesses divert recyclables and food waste from landfills. We’ve connected the circular food system by providing finished compost to homes, farms, and landscaping projects, aiding in the reduction of synthetic fertilizers and rebuilding soil health.
However, much of the agricultural industry, as well as economically disadvantaged groups and organizations, have lagged behind in eco-practices due to cost, accessibility, and misinformation.
This is a critical issue, as 400,000 tons of organic resources are being deposited into the Omaha metro-area landfills. Meanwhile, widespread composting, especially in agriculture, is vital for naturally managing soil health and reducing the nitrate levels that threaten our drinking water.
The Hillside Fund is a charitable organization that closes the gap.
We will fund programs that make the composting process more accessible to people, groups, and communities that have been previously left out. We will help urban and rural farmers utilize composting processes and products to reduce their reliance on nitrate-producing fertilizers..
The result will increase trust and participation in recycling and composting. Composting will become normalized in our community. Farmers and gardeners will adopt alternative practices to rebuild our community’s soil health. It’ll be a common site to see rows of organic material composting on every farm. And the fruits of our labor will begin to clean Nebraska’s drinking water.
This work is not only about equity but also about protecting Nebraska's environment for future generations. We won’t fix all of these problems in our lifetimes, but our work, with your help, will lay an incredible foundation and leave a lasting legacy.
